Introduction |
Gymnema Sylvestre has been used in India for more than 2000 years to control the presence of carbohydrates in urine and diabetes. Gymnema leaves, whether extracted or infused into a tea, suppress glucose absorption and reduce the sensation of sweetness in foods – effects which may deliver important health benefits for individuals who want to reduce blood sugar levels or body weight.

History |
Indian scientists have performed extensive studies to determine the action of this herb on the sugar metabolism. In a study reported in 1930, Mhaskar & Caius found that the leaves of the herb cause hypoglycemia in experimental animals which sets in soon after the administration either by mouth or by injection. Based on this observation, several human studies conducted on gymnema for treatment of diabetes have shown significant reduction in blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (an index of blood sugar control) and insulin requirements (so insulin therapy could be reduced) they suggested that the drug acts indirectly through stimulation in insulin secretion off the pancreas, as it has no direct action on the carbohydrate metabolism. |
Manufacturing Process |
For making the leaf powder of Gymnema the healthy fresh leaves are collected. It should be noted that the leaves should be free from any contamination by environmental toxins. Then they are washed properly (to remove the physical impurities if any) with pure water and dried in a dust free environment. Then it is grinded to make the fine powder. |
Uses |
This herb is a traditional remedy for snakebite. The powder from the dry leaves is dusted upon the wound. Alternately, the powder can be made into a paste with water and applied to the wound or a decoction may be given internally.
The powder form of gymnema sylvestre seed is used for respiratory issues as cough, rhinitis and asthma.
In reducing the symptom of Glycosuria, the dried leaves are used in daily doses of three to four grams for a period of three months or more.
Very high doses of the dried gymnema leaves may even help to repair the cellular damage that causes diabetes (by helping to regenerate the insulin producing beta-cells in the pancreas).
